A migrant in Greece has been acquitted about a year and a half after the death of his son while fleeing across the Mediterranean. The boat capsized in bad weather and the child drowned. The father was subsequently charged with negligent conduct.
The then 25-year-old refugee from Afghanistan and his six-year-old son traveled in a boat in the Mediterranean Sea in November 2020. They were driving from the Turkish coast to the Greek island of Samos with 22 other people when the bad weather started and the boat capsized. The child drowned before arriving in Greece.
After his death, the father had to answer to the court. He acted negligently when he took the child on the perilous journey. On Thursday, the man’s lawyer announced that a court had acquitted the fugitive. Otherwise, he would have been sentenced to ten years in prison.
The charge drew international criticism. Greece has been repeatedly accused of systematically violating the rights of refugees. Another point of criticism is the poor conditions in refugee camps such as Moria. For example, the care for the people who are housed there is not enough.
