After the eruption of the Ruang volcano in Indonesia, authorities issued the highest alert level and warned of a possible tsunami.
The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Response (PVMBG) warned that parts of the volcano could fall into the sea and cause high tidal waves. Thousands of people were brought to safety.
Clouds of rock flung 10,000 feet into the air
On Wednesday, the 725-meter-high mountain of fire flung clouds of ash and rock 3,000 meters into the air. Authorities have established an exclusion zone within a six-kilometer radius around the crater. Ashes and stones also fell on Tagulandang Island, five kilometers away, injuring residents there.
On Thursday, the airport in Manado, the provincial capital of North Sulawesi, was closed as a precaution.
Flights between the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur and the states of Sarawak and Sabah on the island of Borneo were also cancelled.
Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on Earth. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are not uncommon. The Ruang had already caused a violent tsunami more than 150 years ago. The natural disaster in 1871 killed 400 people.
