14,000 houses evacuated – Brazil: Mine collapses, ground sinks 2 meters

Date:

A disused rock salt mine owned by petrochemical giant Braskem in the Brazilian coastal town of Maceió partially collapsed on Sunday. Drone videos show the submerged ground. Authorities are now holding the operator responsible.

The chemical company Braskem must take measures to mitigate the consequences of the environmental disaster, the news portal “G1” quoted on Monday from a joint letter from the government of the state of Alagoas and 13 municipalities in the greater Maceió area to the operator of the mine .

Civil protection had warned that the mines would collapse
On Sunday, one of 35 salt mines previously operated by Braskem, Brazil’s largest petrochemical company, collapsed. In recent weeks, civil protection has repeatedly warned of the collapse of the mines in the city of Maceió.

14,000 homes evacuated
In some parts of the city the ground sank more than two meters. A total of more than 14,000 houses in five neighborhoods have already been evacuated. Drone videos show the submerged ground.

Local authorities now want to take steps to ensure that land and house owners are compensated. Fishermen and mussel collectors must also be supported.
