A 20-year-old Italian man was attacked by a shark in Australia and was so badly injured that he lost a leg. At the beginning of December, a 44-year-old American woman was killed by a shark in the west of the country.
Matteo M. from the city of Parma was attacked by the animal while swimming in northwestern Australia.
The student had gone swimming with a diving mask and had taken a small camera with him to film fish. He swam far away, he wanted to be alone. Reason: Matteo found out that his grandfather had died.
Man describes encounter with shark
“Shortly afterwards I felt a terrible pain in my leg. A shark started pulling me into the sea. Until at one point I grabbed his head with my hands: I tried to open his large mouth and had difficulty getting my leg free, even though I could see that he had gone down from the knee. “Then I started swimming as fast as I could towards the shore,” the man told the daily newspaper “Gazzetta di Parma” about his dramatic experience.
Friend as a lifesaver
“I screamed for fear that the shark would reach me and eat me. I screamed for help from my friend Tommaso, who was on the beach: he was the one who saved me. While also calling for help, he pressed cloths on my injured leg to stop the bleeding until a rescue helicopter arrived: “He owes his life to him. Matteo’s boyfriend is a nurse and diving instructor. His leg had to be amputated at Brisbane Hospital.
“I am very tired and my head hurts”
After the attack, Matteo wrote in a video on Instagram: “I never thought I would survive this monster. I lost so much blood and my leg (…) but that doesn’t matter anymore. You are my heroes, you give me the strength to continue, with your messages and your calls, my only dream is to see you again. Sorry if I can’t answer you, but I’m very tired and my head hurts.”
Experts suspect that the young Italian was attacked by a tiger shark, which at this time of year can approach the beach in the early morning and late afternoon.
According to official data, Australia is the country with the second highest number of shark attacks, after the United States.
