Helicrew was freezing in the fog – lifesavers asked in vain for hot coffee

Date:

Christmas 2023: Because they had only been able to pay a little later, the crew of the Heli 4 medical emergency helicopter in the Tyrolean Zillertal was denied three cups of coffee in a bakery. Shortly before, the saving angels had successfully completed an emergency operation.

Conny Naschberger, an air rescuer on board Heli 4 for many years, still cannot believe what happened to him and his two colleagues on Saturday at a Ruetz branch in the Zillertal. “We were on the return flight from a mission and due to the fog we could not land for a while. Our pilot then found a gap in the fog and we flew under the fog in the Zillertal to Uderns. But nothing worked there anymore,” he says. In any case, the crew was able to land the helicopter safely.

Futile search for a hostel
“We then waited in the cold helicopter for about two hours for better weather and then – really quite cold – we wanted to have three coffees in the nearby Ruetz branch,” says Naschberger. The crux of the matter is that none of the crew members carry a wallet during missions – the money was located at the heliport in Kaltenbach. “But we had to warm up and hoped to get coffee and something to eat at Ruetz. We would have paid on the way home in the evening.”

Despite the unfortunate situation
The pilot, the emergency doctor and the flight rescuer stood at the counter in full gear, explaining their predicament in detail – and making long faces. “An employee made it very clear that everything was only possible against immediate payment,” Naschberger shakes his head in disbelief. The begging didn’t help, the crew had to go back into the cold helicopter hungry and thirsty.

Coffee is available at each cabin without asking
“We regularly have breakfast here and didn’t want anything for free, we just wanted to take the few euros with us a few hours later,” the air rescuer emphasizes. “I am convinced that in this situation we would have received something in every house in Tyrol.” The crew was offered coffee unsolicited at each cabin.

Coupon offered
Naschberger then sent an email to the Ruetz company. Feedback came from the Ruetz Backhaus that the matter would be discussed with the team on site. A voucher was also offered. “But we are not interested in a voucher,” the Yellow Angel flight rescuer emphasizes. The crew will likely avoid the facility in the future.
