“I would have preferred if he killed me” – a heartbroken mother chokes on tears during her daughter’s murder trial. The husband (35) fatally injured her with 19 (!) stab wounds. He is also scarred by the brutal crime in court in Vienna. He now has to spend 20 years in prison.
It is an unusual sight in the Vienna Regional Court: Surrounded by judicial security officers and paramedics, the suspect lies motionless on a stretcher in the courtroom. The officers are still armed in and in front of the room – probably more to protect the 35-year-old. The crime he is accused of is “extremely cruel.”
He killed his wife on July 3 with 19 knife wounds. The Public Prosecution Service wants to spare the jury images: “What you are about to hear is bad enough.” Because the 28-year-old had expressed her intention to break up and that she had met another man, the Syrian completely panicked. “He decided to solve the case himself” – shortly before the massacre, he sent the children to the park with their aunt to play.
Mother had to listen to her daughter’s death
Shortly after the man took out a kitchen knife in the apartment they shared in Vienna-Ottakring, his wife called her mother for help: “During the phone call, the suspect stabbed the victim – 19 times! I repeat: 19 times,” the prosecutor explains the cruelty. “What should I do with a woman who doesn’t love me?” he told police after the crime.
Why is he now being pushed motionless into the courtroom on a stretcher? After being stabbed numerous times, he threw himself from the roof of the house. Because: “I would rather be dead myself,” he repeatedly said to lawyers Manfred Arbacher-Stöger and Lukas Hruby. “He doesn’t hide anything about what he did. But if someone stabs you 19 times, imagine the desperation. We lawyers call it exaggerated,” Arbacher-Stöger tries to explain to the jury, whose faces show deep disgust.
“If he had only known…”
That quickly turned to pity when the mother of the murdered man entered the interrogation room and spoke about the terrible last phone call to her daughter. How she immediately got into the car with her son, drove to the apartment and a neighbor alerted the police. In tears on the witness stand: “He is not a normal person. If only he had known… He didn’t think about the children, didn’t think about his family. We are all dead, we are just empty bodies. I would have preferred if he had killed me. My children are already grown up, they don’t need me anymore.” Her daughter’s little ones are only 3, 4 and 7 years old…
The private representatives are demanding 5,000 euros in bereavement compensation for the family and the costs of the funeral – the connection is fully recognized. Before leaving the room, the 47-year-old sobs: “I loved this criminal as much as I loved my own child. But I want them to give him the death penalty because that would be fair.”
Obviously excluded in Austria. The jury found a 20-year prison sentence for murder was appropriate for the man, who was paralyzed from the waist down. After all, he is blameless and has confessed. Complicating matters: the incredible cruelty. “You have to deal with insults. That is life,” the judge instructs the 35-year-old. After brief consultation, he accepted the verdict and the Public Prosecution Service also decided not to appeal. The prison sentence is therefore legally binding.
