“Hamas survives” – Israel criticizes UN vote for ceasefire

Date:

The Israeli government has strongly criticized the UN General Assembly’s call for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. “Hamas has committed terrible crimes and those who support a ceasefire allow Hamas to continue to survive and commit more atrocities,” said Israel’s UN Ambassador Gilad Erdan.

The UN should call the head of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Yahya al-Sinwar, and demand that he lay down his arms, surrender and release all hostages. “Then there will be a real ceasefire that will last forever.” During the UN General Assembly, Erdan held a sign with the telephone number of the Hamas office in his hand. The UN General Assembly voted on Tuesday evening for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip (see video above). The document was introduced by the Egyptian government and obtained the necessary two-thirds majority.

Hamas is not mentioned directly
153 countries voted in favor, ten against. These include the US, Israel, Czech Republic and Austria. The UN did not have the courage to directly mention Hamas by name, the Austrian Foreign Ministry said. The Austrian representation had tabled an amendment proposing to mention the hostage in the Gaza Strip. The reports from the freedmen were shocking and showed inhuman barbarity, it was said. This cruel reality must also be mentioned.

However, Austria is calling for humanitarian breaks so that all remaining hostages can be released and urgently needed humanitarian aid can reach the Palestinian civilian population. However, an immediate ceasefire would only give Hamas more room to intensify its terror.

Resolution reflects the mood
23 countries abstained, including Germany, Great Britain and Italy. Resolutions of the UN General Assembly are not legally binding, but are considered symbolic. They also reflect the mood of the world.

The approval came from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. His spokesman said the vast majority of countries stand with the Palestinian people and reject “Israeli aggression” and the “expulsion” of the Palestinian people. The Israeli government must accept the outcome and commit to a ceasefire. Hamas also welcomed the call. The terrorist organization’s massacre on October 7 sparked the war in the Gaza Strip.
