For 66 percent of Austrians, a Christmas tree is part of Christmas. This is 85 percent for households with children. Two-thirds do not want to be without an Advent wreath. 71 percent decorate their house and apartment for Christmas. Decoration is especially popular among women.
The big party needs to be prepared and presents need to be bought. 71 percent of 18-40 year olds and 60 percent of 40-50 year olds do this online while lying comfortably on the couch*.
Almost 70 percent bake cookies
However, when it comes to activities at home, there are clear differences in preferences between young and old. Among the 50+ generation, activities prior to the festival decrease considerably. 69 percent of respondents between the ages of 18 and 40 bake cookies during the Christmas period.
Getting into the mood for the holidays with atmospheric Christmas films is a must for 69 percent of 30 to 39 year olds, but also for 63 percent of 18 to 29 year olds. Almost every second person under the age of 30 makes Christmas presents; on average, only one in three does this.
Bad Christmas sweaters are on the rise among boys
The boys also like to cook mulled wine and punch (50 percent) and have a soft spot for Christmas sweaters (39 percent). Only one in ten of those over fifty do this. Inviting friends, eating and drinking together is standard for almost every second person surveyed between the ages of 18 and 40 and gets you in the mood for the party.
Anticipation for the festival decreases with age
Overall, the over 50 generation is no longer as active in pre-Christmas activities. The most popular are the Advent wreath (64 percent) and decorating your house and apartment (62 percent) – but here too with fewer people than the Austrian average of 65 percent. The situation is similar to the Christmas tree, which is 59 percent mandatory.
Christmas cleaning has had its day
The traditional Christmas cleaning or tidying up before the end of the year is outdated across generations, at least according to the survey. Only about a third ensure that the floors and kitchen cupboards are cleaned.
