What a great achievement! When a man jumped from a bridge into the icy Mur in Graz on Saturday, a water sports enthusiast saved his life! The stand-up paddler immediately went to him and dragged him on the sports equipment to the shore.
The Syrian who lived in Graz jumped from the Mur Bridge on Saturday around 2:30 p.m. Witnesses saw this and immediately set the rescue chain in motion. Several patrols from the Graz police immediately arrived on the scene, and a patrol from the Karlauerstrasse police station was also able to locate the man floating downstream in the Augarten Bridge area. But a rescue attempt with the rope that was carried along was no longer possible. The Karlau police officers therefore ran to the Augartensteg and prepared for a rescue attempt in the water.

At that moment, a boater also became aware of the man floating in the Mur. And the man acted immediately and came straight to him. The Syrian was able to hold the water sports equipment. The athlete then dragged the helpless man to the shore. Police officers from the Karlauerstrasse Inspectorate and a patrol from the “rapid intervention group” took over the 46-year-old, pulled him over the embankment and placed him on a park bench.
The police officers administered first aid, immediately removed the wet clothing and wrapped the 46-year-old in a rescue blanket. The man suffered from severe hypothermia and is in hospital.
