According to an old tradition, the Perchten in Grossarl move from farm to farm on December 21 during St. Thomas Night, around the winter solstice, to bring peace, happiness and health. No house should be missing! That takes ten years.
In ancient times, farmers shivered at the scary night of December 21, the winter solstice and the longest and darkest night of the year – and hoped that they would visit the Perchten. For this meant peace, happiness and health for the coming year. The Perchten first appeared in Grossarl in 1846. At least in the archives. The farmers looked forward to the visit until 1911. If they didn’t come, it would spell disaster. The habit later disappeared. But more about that later.
