Dozens of people drowned in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya on Saturday. As the International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced, 61 people, including women and children, were killed in the accident.
Citing survivors, it was said that there were a total of 86 people on the boat. It started in Zwara, the city is 110 kilometers from Tripoli.
“The Central Mediterranean Sea remains one of the most dangerous migration routes in the world,” the IOM said. More than 2,200 people have died this year on the route that crosses the central Mediterranean Sea. This is a “dramatic figure” that proves not enough is being done to save lives at sea, an IOM spokesperson said.
This year, 140,000 refugees have already arrived in Italy
Tunisia recorded the most deaths and missing persons, followed by Libya. The destination is often Italy and therefore the European Union. So far this year, 140,000 refugees have entered Italy, almost twice as many as in the same period last year. Libya has become an important transit country for people fleeing war and poverty to Europe. Most of them dare to make the dangerous crossing to Europe in unseaworthy rubber boats.
In July, the European Union and Tunisia signed a strategic partnership agreement, which will tighten control of maritime borders.
