Two fire brigades, police, emergency doctors and ambulances were alerted around 4:40 am on Sunday to an accident involving at least two unconscious people. But at the scene of the accident it quickly became clear that the two were sleeping off their drunkenness.
When the police arrived at the accident car in the rear of the Disco Empire in St. Martin/Mühlkreis, two people in the back of the vehicle were sleeping so soundly that they could not be woken up for the time being.
The driver denied the accident
When officers finally managed to wake the drunks, the 25-year-old driver from Afiesl initially denied starting the car at all. The car key – it was said to be an Audi A6 Avant, registered in his father’s name – was still in his pocket.
1.58 per thousand
It was only when witnesses said they pulled him from the driver’s seat of the vehicle that he admitted turning on the ignition to turn on the heat. He may have collided with the drawbar of a tanker truck parked in the parking lot. An alcohol test showed a blood alcohol level of 1.58 and his driver’s license was temporarily confiscated.
Passenger insulted police officers
The 23-year-old passenger from St. Stefan/Walde behaved extremely disrespectfully towards the officers. “You can’t afford this car at all,” he allegedly told the police. He was also reported.
Fireman tells
Rene Wiesinger from the St. Martin/Mühlkreis fire brigade, together with another 55 comrades from the St. Martin and Plöcking fire brigades, was woken from her sleep and alerted to the scene of the accident. “Our incident report was ‘an accident in which several people were injured, with at least one person trapped,’” he told the “Krone” on Sunday morning. However, when they arrived on the scene, it quickly became clear that only minor damage had occurred to the bodywork of the accident car.
“It only irritates you for a moment”
What happens next for the emergency services? “You are relieved. With this alarm you are always tense. Afterwards you were annoyed for a moment, but then everyone was very happy and could laugh about it,” says Wiesinger.
