Since Tuesday, there has been an advice for the official procedure for contact with people infected with monkey pox. It describes how to deal with close contacts. One point in particular stands out.
Persons defined as K1 should not only avoid contact with children under the age of twelve, but also with pets (mammals). Over a period of three weeks, mind you!
“Reducing contact with pets makes sense, especially when it comes to rodents or squirrels, which play a central role in the transmission of the disease. This is to avoid retransmissionsays Dr Ulrich Herzog, Austria’s top veterinarian.
No known case in dogs or cats
Do you have to say goodbye to your furry roommates during this time? “Local health authorities are responsible for implementing the recommendations,” the health ministry said. But it shouldn’t be that dramatic. Because an infection in dogs or cats is not yet known.
Animals also get the typical blisters
“The symptoms in animals are basically the same as in humans. Since it is a viral disease, behavioral changes that indicate a fever occur first: Matt, tired, lack of appetite,” said the vet. “As with all smallpox diseases, this causes the typical bumps and blisters, which also burst open and then crust over.” These are first seen in the areas where there is no fur.
