It was almost a miracle that both occupants survived! In the last Ötztal in Tyrol, a microlight crashed last year because of a material cable car. The pilot (39) is said to have fallen below the minimum flight altitude and not have planned the flight sufficiently. Now he stood before the court in Innsbruck.
“I wanted to show my mate the Timmelsjoch from the air,” the suspect explained. But the mid-November flight nearly ended in tragedy. The Frenchman living in Germany overlooked a material funicular. The aircraft made a spin and crashed at 2,725 meters above sea level in alpine terrain. The pilot’s friend, in particular, was seriously injured.
Bad flight planning?
“The flight planning was inadequate and the minimum flight altitude was not reached,” the charges charged the 39-year-old with negligence. The defendant replied that he had prepared well. “But I used maps from German air traffic control and the funicular was not marked correctly.”
Because the actual flight altitude could not be determined, the man was eventually acquitted.
