In Brittany, four people were injured on Sunday when a 30-ton menhir was erected. During the works for the planned tourist park “StoneBreizh” in Carhaix, one of the cables around the stone block has torn, according to the fire service. The minor injuries of the menhir have been taken to hospital.
Several dozen volunteers were involved in setting up the menhir. In “StoneBreizh” a prehistoric circle of stone blocks has to be reconstructed. According to the website of the proposed tourist park, the circle will have a diameter of 43 meters and consist of 36 granite blocks. The menhirs are surrounded by a second circle of slate steles.
“Rediscovered Pride of Brittany”
The planned monument would celebrate the megalithic culture of the Stone Age and, in general, the “rediscovered pride of Brittany”. The upright menhirs from the Stone Age culture in Brittany are also called menhirs.
The menhirs found their way into modern popular culture through the “Asterix” comics. The muscular man Obelix, the title character’s sidekick, constantly carries one of the giant stones on his back.
