Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has threatened Poland with “radioactive ash” following comments by Poland’s foreign minister. Minister Radosław Sikorski spoke in an interview about how the US would likely respond to a Russian use of nuclear weapons against Ukraine.
“The Americans told the Russians that if you detonate an atomic bomb, even if no one is killed, we will hit all your targets in Ukraine with conventional weapons, we will destroy them all,” Sikorski told British newspaper The Guardian. Poland is one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine.
Americans ‘more careful’
The US did not say anything like that “because they were more cautious,” Medvedev wrote to the deputy head of the Russian Security Council on the social network on Sunday.
Polish President Andrzej Duda has asked for US tactical nuclear weapons to be stationed in Poland, he claimed. “Warsaw will not be left out and will certainly receive its share of radioactive ash. Is that what you want?” Medvedev added. Duda said in April that Poland was “ready” to accept NATO nuclear weapons to counter the stationing of Russian tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
Seditious hardliner Medvedev
During his term as president from 2008 to 2012, Medvedev was seen as Russia’s liberal hope. Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, he has become one of the biggest hardliners and defends the war with inflammatory messages on social networks.
Sikorski’s statements probably refer to the autumn of 2022. American media have repeatedly reported that the leadership in Washington at the time had the impression that Moscow could be preparing to use an atomic bomb in Ukraine. The Kremlin was told at the time that the US would not respond nuclearly, but would respond strongly by other means.
