A strange fire brigade operation took place in Hinterhornbach in the Tyrolean Ausserfern on Sunday afternoon. An Iranian and his passenger blindly trusted the navigation system during the drive to Oberstdorf (Bavaria) and got stuck on a cross-country ski trail. They also lit a campfire. The Florianis freed them both from the difficult situation.
Fire chief Stefan Wolf from Hinterhornbach has never experienced anything as incredible as last Sunday, he describes right at the beginning in an interview with the “Krone”.
But one after the other. What really happened? An Iranian driver with a German license plate probably flew blind on his trip to Oberstdorf and relied on his navigation system. This led him on his way along a cross-country ski trail. Instead of turning back, he and his companion rode for more than four miles until the ride finally ended involuntarily.
ÖAMTC cannot do anything on cross-country trails
Because they became stuck, the two first tried to free their vehicle using the jack and wood. A call to the ÖAMTC yielded no results because they cannot do anything on a cross-country trail. Therefore, the only option was to call the fire brigade. Around 4:30 p.m., three Florianis with a tractor and front loader finally set out to free the stranded people.
Campfire was a bigger concern
“The recovery itself wasn’t wild; the car crashed. “We just had to pull it back and use the front loader to make room,” Wolf said. A campfire that the two had recently lit caused even more concern: “The two of them had built a campfire with a field stove about two meters from a wooden hut. When we arrived we noticed large sparks flying. We immediately took it out with a shovel,” said the commander.
The reason for the fire: neither of them were wearing suitable winter clothing and were probably freezing due to the cold. Wolf said: “When we arrived we thought it was funny. When we saw the sparks and the dry wood of the hut, we stopped laughing.”
Presumptions about action
It is not clear why the two ended up there. What is certain, however, is that the two relied on their navigation system and wanted to take the cross-country ski trail to Oberstdorf in Germany. A passerby reportedly saw the two as they entered the cross-country ski trail. One of the two would also have filmed the fast joyride. Wolf suspects it was a challenge. “I asked them if they knew it was a cross-country trail. Then they asked what that was. “Thank God that doesn’t happen that often with us,” Wolf laughs.
Blessing in disguise
No one was injured. Only the cross-country ski trail has suffered and needs to be repaired. However, there is great joy about the action, says Wolf: “The whole village is now laughing at these two.”
