According to aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF), hospitals in the south of the Gaza Strip can no longer cope with the large number of injured people. The emergency room at Nasser Hospital is completely overcrowded, Chris Hook, the head of Doctors Without Borders in the Gaza Strip, said on Tuesday. “Doctors climb over the bodies of dead children to treat other children who will die anyway.” Tents are used as medical wards and as temporary clinics.
Every vacant building would be filled with beds for patients. “The lucky few who survive have life-changing injuries,” Hook explains. Of the 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, only eight are still partially operational and able to admit new patients, according to the UN. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), only one of these eight is still in the northern Gaza Strip.
“Total siege”
Doctors Without Borders spoke of a “total siege” of the coastal area by the Israeli army, which had made medical care extremely difficult. Doctors Without Borders called it a “scorched earth policy that leaves no safe place for people” despite “constant attacks” and evacuations of entire neighborhoods. Most people live in makeshift homes made of “a few pieces of wood” and “plastic wrap” and can barely find enough water for their daily hygiene.
Nearly 20,000 people have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war, including thousands of women and children, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority. Given the many civilian casualties, the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and the great extent of the destruction in the closed coastal area, international criticism of the actions of the Israeli army is growing.
Israel, in turn, claims it is using the attacks to defend itself against Hamas after the October 7 attack and unprecedented massacre that left more than 1,200 dead. According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the army must fight until “complete victory over Hamas” and until all hostages kidnapped from Israel are released. But experts disagree on whether Israel can completely destroy Hamas and its ideology with this war.
