The Regional Administrative Court in Trento (Italy) has once again suspended the killing of two problem bears. Among them is the bear JJ4, which reportedly attacked and killed a 26-year-old jogger last April (see video above).
She is currently staying in an animal center in Casteller. The second problem boar is known under the code MJ5. The man attacked a man while walking his dog in a forest in Trentino. According to the Regional Administrative Court, it is not allowed to kill the bear, but it can be captured. In the province of Trento, a regulation had previously been passed requiring the killing of both animals.
A court hearing is scheduled for January 11 to decide whether or not the bear JJ4 will be transferred to a protected area in Romania at the expense of the animal protection association LAV. Animal rights activists complain that a “climate of fear and hatred towards bears has been created in Trentino.”
Animal rights activists want wildlife corridors
Since the jogger’s death in Trentino, the debate over the coexistence of bears and humans in Italy has come to a head. Many people protested the original plan to kill JJ4 and MJ5.
Animal rights activists are also calling for raising awareness about wildlife or establishing wildlife corridors. Instead of 50 as planned, 100 wild bears have settled since the start of the EU project “Life Ursus”.
