In September, Austria had the most asylum applications per capita in the EU. For every hundred thousand inhabitants, 87.6 first applications have been submitted. Cyprus came in second place (79.3 applications).
Across the EU, the rate was 21.9 applications per hundred thousand people. In September, a total of 98,240 people applied for asylum for the first time in one of the 27 EU countries. That is slightly less than the population of Klagenfurt.
Most initial applications were made in Germany (27,885), Spain (13,395), France (13,100) and Italy (11,930). Together this is the clear majority (67 percent) in the EU. The largest group in September consisted of Syrians, followed by people from Turkey, Afghanistan, Venezuela and Colombia. Austria recorded the highest number of initial applications per capita.
705 unaccompanied minors
When it comes to unaccompanied minors, Austria ranked third in the EU after the Netherlands and Germany with 705. In September 2023, a total of 4,055 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum in the European Union for the first time. Most of them come from Syria and Afghanistan.
According to the European statistical agency Eurostat, the fewest asylum applications in total were submitted in Hungary. In September of the previous year there were ten percent fewer applications.
As reported, representatives of the EU countries and the European Parliament agreed on Wednesday on a fundamental reform of the asylum system. For example, harsher treatment of people from countries considered relatively safe and uniform border procedures are planned. The aim is to combat irregular migration. In order to implement the plan, the plenary meeting of the European Parliament and the EU countries must agree again.
