Despite Western rejections, Russia continues to claim that Ukraine is preparing to use a radioactive “dirty” bomb in the war. A so-called dirty bomb consists of radioactive material released with conventional explosives. Unlike an atomic bomb, there is no nuclear chain reaction.
The US refusal to take cognizance is unacceptable, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in Moscow on Tuesday, according to Russian news agencies. This is “an approach that is anything but serious, one that I think is inappropriate given the seriousness of the risk.”
Russia made the allegations public on Sunday, while Ukraine, the United States, France and Britain dismissed them. US National Security Council communications director John Kirby said Monday there was absolutely no truth to the Russian claim. “It’s just not true. We know it’s not true,” Kirby said.
In response to Russia’s allegations against Ukraine, Kiev itself has requested supervision by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for two research institutes whose work Moscow refers to (see video above).
Prelude to military escalation?
Meanwhile, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis called on the West to take Russia’s claims of a “dirty bomb” seriously. Moscow’s allegations that Ukraine is preparing to use a nuclear-contaminated bomb on its own territory during the war could potentially be the prelude to a military escalation.
“It is very reminiscent of the statements made by Russia in the run-up to February 24,” Landsbergis said. At the time, before the attack on Ukraine, Moscow had also spread false information about chemical plants that allegedly exist in Ukraine.
