Shots were fired at the Faculty of Philosophy of Charles University in Prague on Thursday afternoon. Several people were reported dead and injured, and the shooter was also “eliminated,” according to police.
The gunman is said to have entered the main building of the Faculty of Arts in Prague’s Old Town on Thursday afternoon and shot around. The building was evacuated and the Jan-Palach-Platz in front of it was cordoned off over a large area.

Video footage on social networks shows people fleeing in panic. The police arrived with a large contingent and announced a short time later that the shooter had already been “eliminated”.
Several dead and injured
The exact number of victims is unclear; the police spoke of “several deaths and injuries”. She urged people to avoid the area. Residents are not allowed to leave their homes. Photos showed students leaving the building with their arms raised.
Another video shows students clinging to a windowsill, and photos of the black-clad gunman are already circulating online. He was likely armed with an assault rifle.
Humanities are taught at Charles University’s Faculty of Philosophy. Jan-Palach-Platz is located just a few hundred meters from the famous Charles Bridge.
