A UN report accuses the Israeli army of killing at least eleven unarmed Palestinians. The men are said to have died during an operation in a residential building. The Israeli government rejected the criticism on Thursday, even calling it “slander” and propaganda for Palestine.
The report is based on “unverified” and “unsubstantiated” facts, an Israeli government official said Thursday. It is yet another example of the “partisan and biased” approach that the High Commission for Human Rights has taken against Israel for years. “The United Nations cannot be seen as a serious partner if its bodies and agencies continually serve as a mouthpiece for Palestinian propaganda and a shield for Hamas terrorists.”
Austrian heads high commission
The UN High Commission is led by Austria’s top diplomat Volker Türk. The team said on Wednesday it had received “disturbing information” about the killing of at least 11 unarmed Palestinians in the city of Gaza by the Israeli army. They were said to have been killed during an operation in a residential building in the West Bank. Other families were also said to be at the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the men were first separated from their wives and children and then shot dead in the presence of their relatives. The UN body is now demanding that the Israeli government investigate the alleged incident.
The Israeli army came under increasing criticism
After more than two months of war against the radical Islamic Hamas, the actions of the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip are increasingly criticized. Last weekend, for example, the accidental killing of three Israeli hostages by Israeli soldiers sparked violent protests. The army had admitted that the men met the soldiers unclothed and with a white flag in their hands.
The war began on October 7 with Hamas atrocities against civilians in Israel. About 1,140 people were killed and about 250 others were abducted to the Gaza Strip. In response, the Israeli military has since bombed targets in the Gaza Strip and launched a ground offensive. According to Hamas, at least 20,000 people were killed.
