War in the Middle East: New ceasefire talks are inconclusive

Date:

There is still no ceasefire in sight in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government is holding talks with representatives of the US and Qatar (see video above). While Biden says he is pushing for a new deal, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is concerned.

There will be no ceasefire until Hamas is “eliminated,” the politician said on Tuesday. “Anyone who thinks we will stop is disconnected from reality.” The aim of the talks is to agree on a ceasefire with further hostage releases. Hamas will again exchange Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners in Israel. 129 hostages are still being held. “These are very serious conversations and negotiations, and we hope they lead to something,” White House spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday.

Hamas leader in Egypt
Hamas leader Ismail Haniya traveled to Cairo on Wednesday for talks with Egyptian officials. A possible end to the war must also be on the agenda. Media reported that there had been no results so far, but that talks would continue.

UN resolution expected
A UN resolution on the situation in the Palestinian territories is also expected to be voted on next Thursday. The government of the United Arab Emirates has introduced a text calling for an end to violence in the Gaza Strip. A ceasefire should allow more humanitarian aid deliveries to more than a million people. “After ten weeks of crisis in Gaza, half the population is now hungry and has little access to food, water and shelter,” the World Food Program (WFP) said.

Leading US diplomats are said to be willing to comply, but President Joe Biden is not. The Israeli government has so far also rejected the United Arab Emirates’ proposal. Both governments do not want aid supplies to be controlled by the United Nations.
