With a bloodied T-shirt, Ashrafuddin S. opens the fourth floor door of a house on Zechmeisterstrasse in Linz. Barely an hour earlier, he had held his daughter Zara in his arms, praying for her life!
The two-and-a-half-year-old girl climbed over her parents’ bed and the bedside table on the windowsill around 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday. Mama had opened a small window to let the air in and Zara fell through the screen. Five stories, almost 13 meters deep, led to the concrete basement entrance. “The neighbor rang the doorbell and shouted: ‘Where is your child?'” says the 33-year-old father. The neighbor saw Zara on her way to work and raised the alarm. “I’m with Zara. She stopped moving. I thought she was dead. I picked her up and suddenly she started to whimper,” says the Afghan, who then carried his child upstairs to the apartment.

The situation was initially confusing for the emergency services, as they did not find the child after the emergency call, and the father then took it downstairs to the emergency doctor. “Zara cried and the doctor said that’s a good sign,” the father says. It was said from Kepler University Hospital that Zara was in intensive care with serious injuries, but after several hours of surgery, chief caretaker Simon Kargl is cautiously optimistic that she will make a full recovery.

Meanwhile, the father blames himself: Zara had a high fever at night – around 41 degrees – and her father went to lie with her in the living room, where the cot is, and gave her medicine. Then he fell asleep. Zara woke up, went to the parents’ bedroom, where the Turkish mother, who is pregnant with twins, was sleeping, and climbed on the windowsill. According to the initial police investigation, the little girl had done this before. Then everything happened at lightning speed – the screen tore, Zara fell.
Child also fell through hor in Vienna
A similar accident had taken place in Vienna a few hours earlier. Here too a child, a three-year-old boy climbed on a window on the top floor of the family home, leaned against the screen and fell out: badly injured. There were two more cases in Upper Austria this weekend.
