An incident in rush hour traffic before the long Ascension weekend caused enormous traffic disruption on the Rheintalautobahn towards Germany on Wednesday evening. The cause was a rear-end collision in which a woman was injured and two vehicles were completely destroyed.
On Wednesday at around 5.35 pm, the driver of a Renault was driving on the A14 Rheintalautobahn towards Germany. Due to the crowds, there was slow traffic right in front of the Hohenems gas station, forcing the woman – who was driving in the fast lane – to slow down her vehicle.
The driver of a Mercedes van behind her noticed this too late and, despite immediate braking and an attempt to avoid it, collided with the rear of the Renault. As a result of the violent impact, the right rear wheel of the woman’s car was torn off, the vehicle was pushed forward and pressed against the center rail on the left. The Mercedes came to a stop at the outer guardrail.
The Renault driver suffered bruises and was admitted to Feldkirch State Hospital with suspected whiplash. The driver of the minibus was taken to the state hospital in Bregenz to clarify any injuries. Both vehicles were believed to be a total loss, police said. The Rheintalautobahn had to be completely closed between 17:55 and 18:52 for the duration of the recovery of the vehicle, resulting in a nine-kilometer traffic jam.
