The Sakharov Prize has not reached the family of the late protest icon Jina Mahsa Amini. Iranian security forces seized it, as the human rights organization Hengaw has now reported.
According to her, Amini’s lawyer Mohammed Saleh-Nikbakht wanted to hand over the EU Parliament prize to the family of the young Kurdish woman in Iran. The lawyer was intercepted and interrogated by authorities after his arrival at Tehran airport. In addition to the award, his passport and mobile phone were also confiscated. The information was initially not officially confirmed.
Prize for the Freedom Movement
Amini and the associated freedom movement ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ received the Sakharov Prize in mid-December. Iranian authorities have already prevented the deceased’s family from receiving the award (see video above). The prize has been awarded since 1988 to organizations or personalities that support human rights and freedom of expression.
Jina Masha Amini was arrested by the vice squad in the fall of 2022 for allegedly violating the Islamic dress code. The 22-year-old subsequently fell into a coma and died in police custody. Her death sparked the Islamic Republic’s most violent protests in decades.
