The Turkish army is carrying out renewed attacks on PKK positions in Iraq and Syria. Earlier, Turkish bases in northern Iraq were attacked on Friday and Saturday. Twelve soldiers were killed.
The first attack took place on Friday evening and the next was carried out on Saturday. According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) was behind the attacks. The PKK has been waging an insurgency in Turkey for decades and is classified as a terrorist organization by the EU and the US. Tens of thousands of people have been killed since the conflict began in 1984. The Turkish army regularly carries out operations against the PKK in southeastern Turkey and northern Iraq. This in turn mainly carries out attacks on Turkish security forces. However, civilians are also repeatedly killed.
PKK infrastructure destroyed
On Saturday, after attacking its bases, the Turkish military said it carried out airstrikes and “neutralized” 13 PKK fighters, meaning they were killed or captured. On Saturday evening, the army said it had finally destroyed 29 PKK targets, including caves, bunkers and oil infrastructure. The ministry spoke of “terrorist targets in northern Syria and Iraq.”
In October, the banned party claimed responsibility for an attack on the government district in Ankara. Two police officers were injured in front of the Ministry of the Interior.
