It was not just a storm in a teacup, but a real excitement. As the “Krone” reported, a host in Prambachkirchen asked some teenagers who wanted only water to drink two euros a glass.
The young people spoke of an emergency because a friend was not doing well. The innkeeper, on the other hand, spoke of a self-defense reaction because it became more and more common for young people to just drop by to drink water. The whole of Austria discussed the cause and a “Krone” reader took a closer look at the bill. And discovered an inconsistency. “You only have to pay 10 percent sales tax for water, but the landlord charged 20 percent,” he wrote to us.
The “Krone” asked. And really: both the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce confirm that only 10 percent is intended for water. “But it’s very complicated and confusing. I certainly don’t assume that the landlord did it on purpose,” says Erhard Prugger of the Social and Legal Policy Department of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
No consequences to be afraid of
But now, precisely because many innkeepers apparently do not know, everyone is again told exactly what percentage of the water is taxed. Incidentally, the affected host need not fear consequences.
