The Loud, Quiet Time – Why Heavy Metal Doesn’t Work at Christmas

Date:

From “Oh you cheerful” to “Feliz Navidad” – it is paradoxical: as we sing about the “Silent Night”, there is hardly anything at this moment that accompanies us less than peace. Hardly any moment has been more influenced by music than this one. But why? What if we played heavy metal instead of peaceful sounds? And what do the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ actually have to do with it?

What song immediately comes to mind when you think of Christmas? “It’s going to be pretty good” maybe? Or are you more of a “Jingle Bells” fan? In any case, the gist of the Krone+ editorial team is one thing clear: ‘Last Christmas’ is the most annoying song of the holiday.

And one thing is also clear: Christmas carols work for everyone in one way or another – even if you don’t really have anything to do with them personally, like musicologist Christoph Reuter. But we want to know why this is the case from an expert from the University of Vienna.
