Denying accusations – suspicion of terror: two men, one woman in custody

Date:

The three suspected Islamists who were arrested at a refugee shelter in Vienna-Ottakring are now in custody. The two men and one woman have so far denied being part of the cross-border terrorist network that is said to have planned attacks on Cologne Cathedral and St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

According to court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn, the fact that the National Court of Criminal Affairs imposed pre-trial detention on Monday has to do with the risk of escape, lack of clarity (interference with evidence, which endangers the investigation, note) and the risk of committing a crime. The three suspects “did not make any confession” in court, but two people nevertheless accepted the court’s ruling, which is therefore legally in force until January 8. A suspect has filed a complaint against this.

The reference to IS is checked
As reported, the Public Prosecution Service is investigating the trio for terrorist associations in connection with terrorist crimes. During a search, data storage devices such as mobile phones were seized from the two suspected Islamists and the suspected Islamist. These still need to be evaluated. A possible connection with the terrorist group “Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISPK)” will be investigated. There has been speculation about it, but there is no confirmation yet.

It has not been communicated how many additional officers are currently on duty during the Christmas holidays through New Year’s Eve. The focus of supervision is mainly on churches and religious events, especially church services and Christmas markets. The Christmas masses in the federal capital itself passed without any major incidents.
