Authorities say more than 160 people have been killed in attacks on villagers in Nigeria. Armed groups attacked 20 different towns between Saturday and Monday morning, killing 113 people, the Bokkos district government in central Plateau state said. In neighboring Barkin Ladi, at least fifty more bodies were discovered in four villages, according to a member of the district assembly. There were more than 300 injured.
“We were sleeping when suddenly loud shots rang out,” said an eyewitness. “We were scared because we weren’t expecting an attack. People hid, but the attackers grabbed many of us. Some were killed, others were injured.”
Authorities have deployed security forces to the region, also to prevent possible reprisals. Governor Caleb Mutfwang called it a “barbaric, brutal” attack and vowed to hold the perpetrators accountable.
Jihadists and criminal gangs
The region lies between the north of Nigeria, which is predominantly Muslim, and the south, which is predominantly Christian. There have been repeated violent clashes there between livestock farmers, who are mainly Muslim, and generally Christian farmers. Jihadists and criminal gangs are also active in the region.
