War in Ukraine – Selenskyj critique: diamonds more important than peace?

Date:

Day 36 in Russia’s war against Ukraine: Here are the most important developments of the day.

The most important of March 31 in a nutshell:

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Belgium of continuing to trade in diamonds from Russia. For some, these are clearly more important than the war in Eastern Europe, he criticized.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin says he has signed a decree requiring foreign buyers of Russian gas to pay in rubles from Friday (see video above).

  • Former world boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko traveled with a delegation from the Ukrainian capital Kiev to Germany to seek support there.

  • Russia says it has offered a ceasefire in the disputed Ukrainian city of Mariupol to evacuate civilians.
  • Austria assists in the evacuation and medical care of cancer patients from Ukraine. Five children with cancer from Lviv, accompanied by their mothers, were transferred via Krakow on Thursday to St. Anna Children’s Hospital in Vienna, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

The Russian military offensive in Ukraine is the culmination of a conflict that has been raging for years. A chronology of the events can be found here.
