On St. Stephen’s Day, Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) thanked the executive branch for their greater efforts during the Christmas holidays.
The arrest of three terrorist suspects in Vienna shows that the international cooperation of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution is closely coordinated.
“Continuing tradition”
At the same time, the head of government emphasized that we would not be intimidated: “Let me be clear to those who threaten us: we will not allow our joy and our Christian culture to be endangered. We continue our tradition with great enthusiasm and will continue to do so in the future.”
Suspect arrested before Christmas
On Monday, the Regional Criminal Court imposed pre-trial detention on three terror suspects arrested by special police forces in a refugee shelter in Vienna-Ottakring before Christmas.
They are said to belong to a radical Islamist terrorist network that extends across the country and that is said to have considered attacks on Cologne Cathedral and St. Stephen’s Cathedral (see links to articles below).
The three suspected terrorists – two men and a woman – deny the allegations. A suspect has filed a complaint against his pre-trial detention.
Data carrier secured
Data carriers – including their mobile phones – were seized from the three suspected Islamists during a house search and are now being evaluated.
The Public Prosecution Service is investigating the trio for terrorist association (§278b StGB) in connection with terrorist crimes (§278c StGB).
