Former US President Donald Trump has now achieved legal success in Michigan. The US state Supreme Court has rejected an attempt to remove the politician from the ballot in next year’s primaries. The questions submitted may not be assessed by this court, the court said.
The content of the allegations was not investigated. As reported, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled last week that Trump was unfit to serve as president due to his role in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and therefore could not participate in the primaries. In Michigan, Judge Elizabeth Welch said the election law in this US state differs fundamentally from that in Colorado. Candidates there must be ‘eligible’, in Michigan there is no similar provision in the law.
Additional lawsuits in Minnesota and Oregon
The group ‘Free Speech for People’ had also called for Trump to be excluded from the primaries in the US states of Minnesota and Oregon. This has already been rejected in Minnesota and the process is still ongoing in Oregon. The plaintiffs each invoke the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which bars members of the government from future office if they have participated in an “insurrection or insurrection” against the constitutional order. Lawsuits were dismissed by lower courts. So far there has been no discussion about the content, the only question is who is responsible for it.
Case for the Supreme Court?
Trump wants to return to the White House for the Republicans after the 2024 presidential elections. The differing assessments in Colorado and Michigan could lead to the U.S. Supreme Court taking up the issue. The former president has already announced that he will appeal the ruling in Colorado. However, the decision was only suspended with the verdict.
