Firefighters harassed by refugees during a fire operation in Steyregg in Upper Austria – this headline caused a lot of discussion. The “Krone” listened on site, met the mayor of the municipality and is already aware of the first consequences after the operations in the asylum accommodation.
A blue container flooded with firefighting foam. For the former CoHotel in Steyrergg – which now serves as a refugee home for 120 young boys – the consequences of Thursday evening’s container fire are clearly visible.
It was around 10.30pm when the fire brigades of Steyregg and Lachstatt were called to a fire alarm at the CoHotel – which serves as accommodation for 120 young asylum seekers. “When we arrived at the operational address, it was clear that a waste container was completely on fire. The residents of the shelter danced around the seat of the fire and thus hindered the fire brigade’s access to the scene,” says fire chief Rudolf Beurer.
Harassed by young people
But it got worse: firefighters were harassed by the youths. “We then made sure they stayed with the vehicles and were protected,” Beurer said. Ultimately, seven police patrols and dogs were on site to ensure safety.
