Denmark wants to support the US-initiated military alliance to protect ships in the Red Sea with a frigate. The Danish Ministry of Defense announced this on Friday. The Danish government plans to put the proposal to parliament for a vote in January.
“We are concerned about the serious situation in the Red Sea, where unprovoked attacks on civilian shipping continue,” Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said.
Since the start of the war in Gaza, ships in the Red Sea have been repeatedly attacked by Houthi rebels. According to US intelligence, the rebels in Yemen are supported by Israel’s arch-enemy Iran.
Alliance under American command
To better protect the important shipping route leading to the Suez Canal, the US had entered into a military alliance with the armed forces of other countries. According to the US, more than 20 countries are participating in the initiative, called ‘Operation Prosperity Guardian’, including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Norway and Denmark.
Only Thursday evening did the US military say it had shot down a Houthi rebel drone and missile in the southern Red Sea. The Danish shipping company Maersk announced at the beginning of this week that it would soon allow ships to sail through the Red Sea again after a pause due to the increased attacks.
