No New Year’s Peace – Russia is now hit by attacks again

Date:

One night after Ukraine recorded its worst airstrikes since the start of the war, Russia launched new strikes. Russian combat drones flew over the country with multiple changes of direction, the Ukrainian Air Force reports. But the situation is also tense in the aggressor state – there they claim to have taken down 32 ‘Ukrainian’ drones. The Moscow region is also affected.

In Russia, New Year’s Eve is traditionally celebrated on December 31 – with a Christmas tree, presents, fireworks, rockets, hearty food and lots of alcohol. But a day before the big festival, the situation there probably doesn’t seem worth celebrating – even though the Kremlin regularly tries to make it clear to the population that everything is fine after all.

Anti-aircraft guns were in action over Russia’s Bryansk region on the border with Ukraine on Saturday evening, Governor Alexander Bogomas announced. According to him, five incoming Ukrainian drones were shot down. The Defense Ministry in Moscow said 13 projectiles from Ukrainian rocket launchers had also been fired. According to authorities, one man was killed and four people were injured in the shelling of the Russian city of Belgorod.

Clean-up work in Ukraine
Meanwhile, clean-up work continues in Ukraine following the heavy Russian bombardment on Friday evening. According to preliminary figures, about 30 people were killed and about 160 injured. On the eastern and southern fronts, the Ukrainian army continues to expect Russian attacks on the 675th day of the war.

Bad threatening gestures from Russia
If Russia’s ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, has his way, the worst is likely yet to come. “Only one conclusion can be drawn from this, and it is disappointing for our enemies: the Kiev regime’s military plans have proven to be a complete fiasco. “So be prepared for the worst news in the near future,” Nebensja threatened on Friday (local time) at the emergency meeting of the World Security Council in New York.

Desperate Biden calls for further help
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden again urged Congress to approve further funding for Kiev. “There is much more at stake in this fight than just Ukraine,” Biden warned. “It affects the entire NATO alliance, the security of Europe and the future of transatlantic relations.”

With its military assistance, the US could have saved many lives, he emphasized. “But unless Congress takes urgent action in the new year, we will not be able to continue delivering the weapons and vital air defense systems that Ukraine needs to protect its people. Congress must act, and without further delay.” American aid expired at the end of this year. The approval of new funding is stuck in the dispute between Republicans and Democrats in the US Congress.
