In its report on the condition of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) expresses its concern about an impending nuclear accident, a so-called MCA (short for worst case scenario). Immediate measures are needed to prevent this, including a safety zone around the nuclear power plant, according to the report published Tuesday by the UN agency based in Vienna.
The report summarizes the findings of IAEA experts’ visit to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant last week. The IAEA is ready to set up such a zone with immediate effect.
The situation at the power plant is very worrying. During the investigation, damage was also found at the six reactors and the nuclear waste storage sites. Although some work has already been done to repair the damage, it is not yet completed.
Ukrainian technicians under great stress
During their visit to the nuclear power plant, IAEA inspectors noted the presence of Russian military personnel, as well as armed forces vehicles and equipment. The Ukrainian power plant technicians, controlled by Russian soldiers, are subjected to great stress that could lead to human error.
Emergency stop after bombing of the nuclear power plant
It was not until Monday that all reactors at the nuclear power plant were shut down again due to shelling. Ukrainian nuclear power plant operator Energoatom announced on Telegram that a power line had been shut down due to a fire. This led to the emergency shutdown of the last operational block six – it supplied the Ukrainian grid and the nuclear power plant itself – it said.
The Ukrainian army said it had previously destroyed four Russian ammunition depots in the Kherson region. Bridges over the Dnipro River were also under fire, the southern command of the Ukrainian armed forces said.
