Renewed excitement over a hacker attack! This time it was Wien-Süd, one of the oldest and largest housing companies in Austria. Up to 50,000 customers have been affected, according to an initial report.
Since Monday 4 July, the non-profit construction and housing cooperative “Wien-Süd” GmbH and related companies can only operate to a limited extent after a hacker attack. The IT systems were disrupted by data encryption and there was also access to customer data!
The fact is: access has taken place. Whether it’s particularly sensitive account information cannot be confirmed at this time for tactical reasons, according to a “Krone” request. According to the current state of knowledge, it is not yet possible to say with certainty whether data stocks have actually been leaked. For the sake of transparency, customers were preemptively informed by e-mail. In any case, no sensitive data has appeared or published on the internet yet.
It is not yet clear who is behind the latest attack. According to the company spokesperson, the criminal group is acting completely anonymously.
“We immediately took all necessary legal and technical steps to restore full functionality of the IT. To do this, we work around the clock with specialists in forensics and cybercrime,” said deputy chairman of the company, Walter Koch.
“The system is no longer in danger, the central databases for the operation, according to the current state of knowledge, were not reached by the attack,” says “Wien-Süd”. Accessibility by e-mail and telephone is maintained, even current projects are not endangered. A full system restore is expected next week.
