Every year there is a blast! Much to the annoyance of dogs, cats, etc. The hustle and bustle around New Year’s Eve often starts days earlier and causes constant stress for pets and wild animals. We have collected some tips on how you can at least remedy the situation at home.
Entering the new year relaxed with Bello and Mieze is a dream for pet owners. Because despite inflation and predicted high levels of pollutants in the air, it will be loud again on New Year’s Eve.
Have you ever experienced a skittish dog on New Year’s Eve? If not: the four-legged friend is afraid of death! The sound and flashes of exploding fireworks cause animals to panic. This fear can be seen in pets, and wild animals could be in much worse shape.
Nature is suffering from the explosion caused by man
Birds exhibit panic reactions and can be driven from their roost for days; some never find their way back. Hedgehogs wake up from their hibernation, deer frantically search for suitable shelters. Especially in winter, our wild animals must manage their energy well, because they have only limited energy and food reserves.
Stay calm and leave the animals in their usual environment
“Krone” animal expert Maggie Entenfellner also knows from her own experience how important correct behavior is: “I almost never pay attention to background noise so as not to increase my animals’ fear. I create retreats and stay with them in the apartment at midnight, that works best for us. I would like people to avoid fireworks.”
A sign of consideration
For years, the pushback on private fireworks shows and the call for retailers to remove pyrotechnics from their range have been growing louder. Penny is the first supermarket in Austria to stop selling fireworks in 2021, setting an example for environmental protection and animal welfare. We can only hope that other outlets will finally follow suit!
