Since the beginning of 2023, 155,754 refugees (as of December 29) have arrived in southern Italy after sea journeys across the Mediterranean. In the comparable period of 2022 there were 103,846.
On Saturday, boats with 79 people on board were brought to safety off the coast of Lampedusa by the EU border protection agency Frontex. The three different groups of migrants who left Libya and Tunisia were housed in the island’s refugee camp.
Hundreds of migrants were rescued from the central Mediterranean over the Christmas holidays. Most traveled to Lampedusa via Tunisia.

The NGO ship “Ocean Viking” is currently en route to Bari, where 244 people rescued in the last 24 hours will disembark.
The people were brought to safety as part of three rescue operations (see Facebook post below).
The rescue ship “Geo Barents”, operated by the NGO “Doctors Without Borders”, will arrive early next week in the northern Italian Adriatic port of Ravenna. The ship is currently in Libyan waters with 336 people on board.
