Drama before New Year’s Eve! One day before New Year’s Eve, a fatal ski touring accident took place in the Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg. A 53-year-old German woman slipped while climbing on frozen snow, slid down a slope and fell into a stream, where her head was submerged.
Two German citizens started a ski tour on Saturday around 9:45 a.m. from the parking lot in the municipality of Baad in the Kleinwalsertal and climbed the so-called summer path through the Tura Valley towards Güntlispitze.
Due to the icy snow cover, the two tourers mounted crampons on their touring skis after crossing the Derrenbach and continued the climb.
53-year-old loses her balance and falls
After another short climb in steeper terrain, the 53-year-old woman fell over during a bend and slid about 100 to 120 meters down a steep slope without being able to find a handhold.
She then fell over a slope into the Derrenbach, where she lay with her head in the water. Her companion immediately climbed to the injured woman, pulled her head out of the water and immediately began CPR.
The victim was underwater for several minutes
However, the 53-year-old had already been under water for a few minutes and showed no signs of life, which meant that resuscitation by the first aid and later the emergency doctor was not possible. Due to the impassable terrain, the victim had to be rescued with a rescue rope.
The operation involved twenty people from the Mittelberg mountain rescue service, an ÖAMTC helicopter, a police helicopter and three officers from the Kleinwalsertal police station. In addition, the crisis intervention team with three supervisors was called in.
