The 83-year-old queen, who announced this decision by surprise in her traditional televised New Year’s speech, has set January 14 as the date to formally leave the Danish throne.
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, the only woman to head a monarchy, announced her abdication in favor of her son, Prince Frederik, during her traditional televised New Year’s speech.
The 83-year-old queen, who announced this decision by surprise, has set January 14 as the date to formally leave the Danish throne.
Margaret II wore the crown of the Danish Royal House for 52 years, during which time she was a state figure.
The monarch explained that the back surgery she underwent last February made her think about the future and “whether the time had not come to leave the responsibility to the next generation.”
“I have decided that this is the right time. On January 14, 2024, 52 years after I succeeded my beloved father, I will no longer be Queen of Denmark,” she announced.
