More than every second person in Germany expects the AfD to be able to appoint the prime minister this year. Specifically, 53 percent believe it is likely that the Alternative for Germany will win an absolute majority in at least one of the three state elections.
This is evident from a study by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency. 2092 people from all over Germany participated online. Especially in the east of the country, respondents expect that the AfD will come to power in one of the states of Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg and become the head of the government. The state parliaments are elected there in September (see video above). So far, the AfD is clearly at the forefront of all investigations.
Parties rule out coalition
At the same time, all other parties in the three state parliaments are ruling out a coalition with the AfD. However, 42 percent of respondents do not think the CDU/CSU will keep its promise not to cooperate with the party at state and federal level. However, just over one in three people (36 percent) believe the promise will be kept.
According to the survey, only 28 percent of participants consider it likely that the AfD will be the strongest force in this year’s European Parliament elections; the clear majority (57 percent) considers such a scenario unlikely. The CDU/CSU will most likely come first in the European elections, followed by the SPD and the Greens. The picture looks the same for the next federal elections in the fall of 2025.
Mayor of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt
The Alternative for Germany is already responsible at the local level. Last year, a politician from the party was elected mayor of Saxony-Anhalt for the first time. In mid-December, another candidate won the mayoral elections in Pirna, Saxony. In addition, the AfD has been in the state parliament in the Sonneberg district for about six months.
