In response to the growing number of attacks on cargo ships in the Red Sea by the Iran-backed Houthi militia, the US formed an international alliance before Christmas to ensure security on shipping lanes. The US Navy successfully repelled an attack last weekend. Several Houthi boats were sunk. While the Yemeni militia remains belligerent, Iran has now also sent a warship to the region.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea stressed on Monday that action would continue against cargo ships trading with Israel or with other ties to the country. These are “humanitarian operations” to support the Palestinian people, the spokesman said, confirming that 10 militiamen had been killed in the US operation.
Iranian warship wants to ‘secure routes’
Meanwhile, Iran says it has sent a warship to the Red Sea. The frigate Albors passed through the Strait of Bab al-Mandab, as the online portal “Nur News” reported on Monday. No further reasons were given for the use of the frigate. However, Iran’s Tasnim news agency pointed out that military ships have been operating in the region since 2009 to “secure shipping lanes” and ward off pirate attacks.
The Houthis, like Hezbollah and Hamas, see themselves as part of the self-proclaimed “Axis of Resistance” directed against Israel. They are all supported by Iran.
