In its investigation into the attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, the US Department of Justice is increasingly targeting people close to then-President Donald Trump. The ministry is said to have requested information from several dozen former and current Trump employees in recent days.
According to the “New York Times” and the broadcaster CNN, it is partly documents, but also a subpoena for a statement. Among them is the president’s former social media boss, Dan Scavino, who still works for Trump.
The thrust relates to campaign finance
The ministry has already sought information from people close to Trump in recent months, under threat of criminal charges, the New York Times reported. This time, however, the tenor is different and now also refers to campaign finances.
Trump supporters stormed the seat of Congress in Washington on January 6, 2021. Congress met there to formally confirm the victory of Trump Democratic challenger Joe Biden in the previous presidential election. The violent mob wanted to prevent that. Five people, including a police officer, were killed in the riots. Trump had recently incited his supporters at a rally by claiming his election victory had been stolen. He therefore had to face an impeachment trial in Congress, from which he was eventually acquitted.
Hundreds of rioters were already in court
The Department of Justice has been investigating the storming of the Capitol for months. Hundreds of rioters that day were brought to justice. However, there is increasing pressure on the ministry to also prosecute Trump. In a committee of inquiry in the House of Representatives that investigates the background of the attack, several witnesses have heavily charged Trump.
Most recently, the Justice Department had launched an investigation against the Republican in another case involving the storage of classified government documents on Trump’s private estate in Florida.
