Guests stranded – Mouse stopped the cart cable car on New Year’s Eve

Date:

Nearly 200 guests were stuck on Dornbirn’s home mountain on New Year’s morning. Due to a technical fault on the cart track, the gondola no longer drove to the valley from 1:30 am. On Tuesday morning, the reason for the failure of the control system was determined: a mouse had nibbled on a cable and the railway’s electronic control system failed.

The defect occurred around 1:30 am and led to a work stoppage. The gondolas were driven into the stations via a specially secured emergency operation. After first trying to correct the error, it was decided relatively quickly to take the guests to the valley station in minibuses from the cable car, the fire brigade and the mountain rescue service.

The operation took several hours
Due to the large number of guests and limited space, this took several hours. Families with children had priority; some guests had to wait several hours for their turn. Some of those waiting decided to enter the valley on foot.

The new construction of the technical facilities will take place next year
The damaged parts of the system are replaced. The train and the panoramic restaurant can run again on Tuesday from 4 p.m. In addition, a major modernization step is planned for the cart track next year.

The plan is to completely replace the electrical steering, replace the tension cable and, if necessary, move the support cable. This requires a maintenance window of several months, which will also be used for the renovation of the valley station.
