At least 73 people were killed in an explosion in the Iranian city of Kerman on Wednesday. There is the grave of the powerful General Ghassem Soleimani, who is venerated as a martyr by government supporters loyal to the system and whose fourth anniversary of his death was celebrated.
He was killed in a US military drone strike in Iraq on January 3, 2020. His death was commemorated on Wednesday in Soleimani’s hometown of Kerman, Iranian state television reported.
Crowds of people made pilgrimages through the streets of the city to the tomb. Suddenly the sounds of an explosion were heard. According to the semi-state news agency Nournews, “several gas cylinders exploded on the road to the cemetery.”
Terror attack?
According to the latest information, at least 73 people were killed and more than 170 others were injured. Rescuers rushed the injured to a hospital. The deputy governor of Kerman spoke of a terrorist attack, but the exact reason for the explosion is still unclear. There were also reports that a second explosion had occurred.
Ghassem Soleimani was the commander of the foreign units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). His killing by the US military four years ago led to an escalation of tensions and a retaliatory attack by Iranian forces on a US base in Iraq.
