CO2 emissions in the transport sector will have fallen again in 2023

Date:

According to the Petroleum Industry Association, about 240 million liters less fuel was filled in Austria last year than in 2022. This means that CO2 emissions from transport have fallen by about 600,000 tons.

Last year, traffic caused about 20 million tons of CO2, about 0.6 million tons less than in 2022 and about four million tons less than in 2019.

However, compared to 1990, traffic caused more than 40 percent more climate-damaging emissions.

However, other sectors, such as construction, agriculture or energy and industry, have succeeded in reducing emissions in recent decades compared to 1990 levels.

Traffic is still far from achieving the climate targets for 2030 and 2040.

According to the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ), lower speed limits would be effective and quick to implement to reduce CO2 emissions.

Lower speeds also increase road safety, reduce the number of serious road accidents and save lives. In addition, more public transport connections are needed.

“It is pleasing that CO2 emissions from transport in Austria fell for the second time in a row last year. To achieve the climate target, greater speed is needed in climate protection in the transport sector and additional measures,” the VCÖ said in a press release.
